Écorché of the Head and Neck

This workshop is a full examination of the anatomy, structure, and surface forms of the portrait head including morphology, structure and facial expressions. In addition, it includes the analysis of facial expressions, their cause and the manner in which they affect surface form.

Students model a skull and cervical column in detail in water-based clay. Then they apply the muscles from the inside out using the Ecorche method. Upon completion of the Echorche, or flayed head, the surface morphology is added. Attention is paid to the relationship of the underlying forms and the surface.

Finally, students study the mechanisms of facial expression using the recent findings on this most fascinating, often ignored topic. Each expression is examined by itself. Its cause, the muscles involved and the effect on the surface form are the topics of the inquiry.

Expression combinations also are examined, for example, surprise and joy at the same time. Students morph their existing sculptural heads into each expression successively. If there is additional time, students will model the head from life.

Stephen Perkins is a figurative sculptor trained and working in the classical method. He has studied with sculptors Walker Hancock, Leslie Posey and Elisabeth Chandler as well as painters Henry Hensche, Deane Keller and Cedric Egeli. Stephen has taught at The New York Academy, The Academy of Art University and the Grand Central Academy and taught workshops at the national and international levels. His awards include the Paul Jennewein Medal, the Bartlett Prize and five academic scholarships from the National Sculpture Society. Stephen maintains a studio in Florida.
